The company began in 2003 as the maths tutoring school 学而思, listed in New York in 2010 and took the name 好未来 ('good future') in 2013. The 2021 双减 policy banned for-profit tutoring in school subjects, and TAL moved into learning devices and non-academic courses. Its long-time rival is 新东方 (New Oriental).
