大宛

Located in today's Ferghana Valley (Uzbekistan / Tajikistan / Kyrgyzstan), Dayuan was a Hellenistic-influenced state on the early Silk Road. Han Wudi's two military expeditions to Dayuan (104-101 BCE), launched to seize the famous 'blood-sweating' Ferghana horses (汗血宝马), are recorded by Sima Qian in the 《史记·大宛列传》.

宛 here is read yuān (1st tone), not the more common wǎn (3rd tone, as in 婉转 / 宛如). Always 'Dà-yuān'.
