任天堂

任天堂 is the direct kanji of the Japanese name Nintendō (founded 1889 in Kyoto, originally a hanafuda playing-card company). The kanji are read in Mandarin as Rèntiāntáng — sometimes glossed as 'leave luck to heaven' (任 leave / 天 heaven / 堂 hall), though that folk etymology is not confirmed by the company.

In mainland China, the original NES was nicknamed 红白机 (Hóngbáijī, 'red and white machine') because of its console colours. Mario is 马里奥 and the Switch is 任天堂 Switch.
