Drawn as a hand passing something downward to another hand — the upper hook hands over, the lower loop receives. Indexed under Kangxi #6 亅 (jué) by tradition, taken from the central hook stroke. From the giving-hand picture come both senses: 'to bestow' and the literary 'I, me' (the giver speaking).
