Prefecture-level city in Guangdong (广东), sandwiched between Guangzhou and Shenzhen. One of the world's largest manufacturing bases — its factories produce a huge share of global electronics, toys, and garments. Known as '世界工厂' (the world's factory).

The 莞 character is read guǎn in this place name, NOT wǎn. Outside of 东莞, 莞 more commonly appears read wǎn (as in 莞尔 wǎn'ěr, 'to smile slightly').
