history

Designated as the foreign Legation Quarter after the 1860 Convention of Peking, sealed off and besieged for 55 days during the 1900 Boxer Uprising, and used by foreign diplomats until 1959. The Yuan-era name was 江米巷 ('glutinous-rice lane') — a granary district later phonetically reshaped into 交民巷.
