Tips

history
In old Chinese 鼻 also meant "beginning": an ancient belief held that the nose is the first part of a baby to form in the womb. So 鼻祖 is the very first ancestor, and now the person or thing that started a whole tradition.
usage
鼻祖 is bookish and almost always figurative, often after 被称为 or 号称. 始祖 is close in meaning; 祖师 is the founder of a craft or a religious sect.
