On the mainland 血红素 is heme, the iron-containing part, and 血红蛋白 the whole oxygen-carrying protein; in Taiwan 血红素 usually means hemoglobin. Lab reports abbreviate it Hb. 血 takes its written reading xuè here, not the colloquial xiě.
