Shijiazhuang grew from a village into a major city because it was the junction of the Beijing-Hankou (
京汉) and Shitaiyuan (
正太) railways in the early 20th century. In 1947 it became the first large city liberated by the PLA, and was Hebei's provincial capital from 1968.
