Tips

culture
Night watchmen once struck a hollow wooden 梆子 to call the hours (打更). In opera, two hardwood sticks of unequal length beat time, and they gave their name to a whole family of loud, high-pitched northern operas, 梆子腔: 河北梆子, 豫剧 (Henan opera) and 秦腔 all belong to it.
