On 25 September 1937 at Pingxing Pass in northern Shanxi, the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army under Lin Biao (
林彪) ambushed a Japanese supply column of the 5th Division, destroying around 1,000 troops. The first tactical victory of Chinese forces in the War of Resistance, it was a major morale boost in the desperate early months of the war.
