history

Named in 1687 by the Polish-German astronomer Johannes Hevelius, who used a sextant to chart star positions. 六分仪 = sextant (literally 'six-part instrument,' from its 60-degree arc). 座 (-zuò) is the suffix on every Chinese constellation name (狮子座 Leo, 双子座 Gemini).
