打表

dǎbiǎo
verb

Meanings

  1. 1 to run the meter (in a taxi)
  2. 2 to start the taximeter

Examples

Shīfu, máfan nín dǎbiǎo.
Driver, please run the meter.
Bù dǎbiǎo de chē wǒ bù zuò.
I won't take a cab that doesn't use the meter.

Tips

usage
打表 literally 'hit the meter' — here carries its general 'to operate/engage' sense (as in 打电话 'make a call'). In tourist areas some drivers will refuse (不打表) and demand a flat negotiated price, which usually costs more. Always insist on 打表 unless you've agreed a 议价 (fixed fare) upfront.
