布达拉 (Bùdálā) is a Tibetan-via-Sanskrit transliteration of Potala (पोतलक), the mountain abode of Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) in Buddhist cosmology. The Lhasa hill — in Tibetan Marpo Ri 'Red Hill' — was renamed Potala because the Dalai Lamas, considered emanations of Avalokiteśvara, made it their seat. The thirteen-story Potala Palace
布达拉宫 (built 1645–1694 under the Fifth Dalai Lama) crowns it.
