The name
长治 ('lasting order') was given by the Ming Jiajing emperor in 1529. The city sits on the
上党 plateau — the 'high land above the clouds' — and was the command base of
八路军 during the Anti-Japanese War. The 1947
上党战役 fought in this region was an early decisive win for the Communists in the civil war.
