On August 8, 2010, a catastrophic mudslide (
舟曲特大泥石流) triggered by heavy rain destroyed much of the county seat, killing over 1,700 people and becoming one of China's worst natural disasters of the decade. August 8 is still observed locally as a day of remembrance.
